2 Social Media Red Flags
As social media managers (or businesses) who are advertising in the digital space, we have to be mindful of the people we are interacting with. Here are 3 social media red flags that every business should look out for. Not only that, these should be avoided in any marketing that your brand is doing as they send a negative message to potential customers
Inconsistent branding
Branding plays a key role in how your business is perceived. When an account has an inconsistent theme/purpose, it can confuse potential customers and drive them away. Clear consistent messaging with the same logos, color scheme and fonts ensure that customers who see the post, can easily link it back to your business. Inconsistent branding also reflects a lack of care and attention to detail, especially when it comes to driving awareness. This could be damaging to the company’s reputation as a whole and make it difficult to gain new customers.
A now famously known example of brand consistency is the Duolingo Owl. Plastered all over its app, website and social media pages, we have come to easily associate the cute green owl with the language learning app. The owl is the link between the duolingo app and its social media presence, helping them amass over 500 million users on their app.
2. Inactivity
Inactivity is one of the easiest ways to lose potential customers’ interest. It can be a sign that the company is not investing any time/effort into their customer relationships and can be a red flag for any potential customers. Inactivity also makes it unclear to customers whether or not the business is still in operation, which could lead to confusion. To remain competitive, companies need to stay up to date with the latest trends and best practices on social media. If a company's profile is rarely updated or inactive, it can make them appear outdated and out of touch with their audience.
The best way to avoid this is by choosing a number of times to post every week (or month) that is achievable, and stick to that minimum (you can always post more if you want!). There are countless social media content calendars online that you can use to help you keep track.
